On critical behaviour in gravitational collapse
We give an approach to studying the critical behaviour that has been observed in numerical studies of gravitational collapse. These studies suggest, among other things, that black holes initially form with infinitesimal mass. We show generally how a black hole mass formula can be extracted from a transcendental equation. Using our approach, we give an explicit one parameter set of metrics that ...
متن کاملCritical Phenomena in Gravitational Collapse
It was well known that strong enough initial configurations of matter field would result in gravitational collapse to black holes, whereas weak enough initial data become dispersed to infinity. However, what happens in the intermediate region was not clear until the discovery of the critical phenomena in gravitational collapse by Choptuik in 1993 [1]. He examined numerically the spacetime evolu...
متن کاملCritical Phenomena in Gravitational Collapse
As first discovered by Choptuik, the black hole threshold in the space of initial data for general relativity shows both surprising structure and surprising simplicity. Universality, power-law scaling of the black hole mass, and scale echoing have given rise to the term "critical phenomena". They are explained by the existence of exact solutions which are attractors within the black hole thresh...
متن کاملInflationary Behaviour in Axial - symmetric Gravitational Collapse
We show that the interior of a charged, spinning black hole formed from a general axially symmetric gravitational collapse is unstable to inflation of both its mass and angular momentum parameters. Although our results are formulated in the context of (2 + 1)-dimensional black holes, we argue that they are applicable to (3 + 1) dimensions.
متن کاملCritical gravitational collapse with angular momentum
Critical collapse in general relativity refers to phenomena that occur at the threshold, in the space of initial data, between data that lead to black hole formation (collapse) and those that do not. Regular initial data can be classified as supercritical or subcritical according to whether or not they form a black hole. We refer to the boundary between supercritical and subcritical data as the...
